The Palos Verdes Peninsula is a unique equestrian community that is located 30 miles from Downtown Los Angeles. Many local equestrians train and compete in many different disciplines, from dressage to team roping, jumping to ranch sorting. They can be trail riding in the morning while enjoying views of Los Angeles or Catalina, then be surfing 15 minutes later.
Ernie Howlett Park is located in the equestrian city of Rolling Hills Estates. The park offers easy connection to miles of trails around the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Come and see what makes this a unique horse community.
Stalls are available but are limited.
Participants must supply their own water buckets & shavings.
No Hookups
The MPH South Bay Spring Trail Challenge will be a three (3) show series. That will have obstacle challenge courses set up in three arenas. Obstacles will be designed to be fun as well as test your horsemanship skills.
Series Buckle in Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced. Must ride in two (2) of three (3) events to qualify for high point series buckle.
Judge Clinic
RIDERS' PARTICIPATION
This is a "fly on the wall experience" where the few riders gain an insider perspective of ETS judging. In this ETS Judging Clinic, the participating riders are asked to attempt the obstacles in the Judges' hands-on training. Regardless if a rider actually does that obstacle, each rider gets to 'listen-in' to the discussion of the performance and the scores immediately after each attempt. Riders are encouraged to view all judges' materials (see below). LIMITED NUMBER OF RIDERS!
JUDGES' PARTICIPATION
This clinic is for both amateur horseman and equine professionals who wish to learn how to apply their expertise and knowledge to judging obstacles as per ETS Standards. This clinic features hands-on practice on example obstacles with real riders. Aspiring judges gain confidence through practice and feedback on their scoring from experienced ETS judges.
PREPARATION FOR THE CLINIC:
The ETS Judging Clinic consists of a short review of ETS Judging Standards with the bulk of the time spent actual practice judging on "live obstacles" with a few riders.
To prepare for the clinic, we ask that you complete the 'Classroom' portion by reviewing the Study Materials located on the Judge Certification page (JUDGE tab). You are asked to take the 'Knowledge Check' prior to the clinic.
Here is a quick link: JUDGE PREPARATION MATERIALS
There is no membership charge with the clinic, simply toggle the Daypass option when you register.
The trail challenge will be held in three arenas.
Arena 1: All weather footing
Arena 2: Sand footing
Trail Arena: Sand Footing
For those wising to go for a relaxed trail ride. Most of the trails are wide enough for two riders to ride next to each other. Many of the trails have gradual slopes to them. Not many are steep. Please be aware that some of these trails run parallel to busy streets.
